Emmanuel Messianic Jewish Congregation was founded in 1915, as the "Emmanuel Neighborhood Center" of East Baltimore. Originally, our purpose was to serve the growing Baltimore Jewish community. Over the years, we have moved several times, as the Jewish community migrated north and west of the city, ending up now in Howard county.
Barry Rubin did not plan to be leader of a Messianic congregation. But 30 years ago, in August, 1981, he did agree to "cover" for the interim leader of Baltimore’s Emmanuel Presbyterian Hebrew-Christian Congregation who was going on vacation for two weeks. He never returned. Now, more than 30 years later, he is still "filling in."
